We are Val & Bernie, and we’ve lived in Wisteria Cottage for a long time. A few years ago we had quite an adventure and moved to France for a few years. Although we loved France and made lots of forever friends, we missed our friends and family over here in the UK, and returned.

During our time In France we found that the French, emphasise good, simple, healthy food, very much a ‘no frills’ approach. We developed an interest in the local boulangeries and observed how they made their ‘pain au levain’. This ignighted a desire to learn how to use French flours and make authentic rustic breads. Our French friends encouraged and happily tested our bakes and when we returned home we wanted to carry on this practice. We decided to create a small batch artisan sourdough bakery here in Overtown, giving us the opportunity to share our love of this special slow-fermented bread with others.

For us, it’s all about the quality of the ingredients providing nutritious bread. Each loaf we make is crafted in small batches using quality flour, time-honoured methods, and a deep respect for the health-promoting qualities of true sourdough. Nothing rushed, nothing unnecessary - just real bread, made properly.

Our sourdough starter is at the heart of what we do. Built from a 45 year old established starter, it brings depth of flavour, character, and a heritage to every bake.

Our aim is to bake bread and other related items once per week for local pickup.

We bake with rural, country values in mind, with care, attention, and pride in our work. Our bread is always non-UPF, thoughtfully made, and always fresh. Expect loaves that are interesting, nourishing, and full of life.
